How do I send an email w/ the suffix @mx.at w/o getting it returned?

A friend I met over the summer gave me their email address (email@mx.at for example), but it keeps getting returned as "unrecognized host. My friend also has the same problem sending emails to me (whocastaspell@yahoo.com). What can I do to solve this problem? Pur phone bills are getting pretty expensive!
